Colors of Autumn

Color is one of the most immediate and emotionally affecting elements in visual art, packed with symbolic and cultural associations, personal meaning, and expressive potential.  Here in Vermont the leaves are just beginning to turn into their fall colors, so I thought it would be an appropriate time to post a little video on COLOR.

My online workshop, Unlocking the Secrets of Color, begins on September 4.  Learn to use color with confidence, and make the most of its visual impact.

  2. Love how the original neutral colors continue to make the orange and blue pop throughout the evolution of the piece- admire the nice clean editing of all your videos. If you don't mind sharing, what program do you use to edit? Just made my first two- minute video and struggled with IMovie as the editor.

    1. Thanks! I use iMovie 6.0.3. I really hate the new verions of iMovie, and had to get the old one onto my new computer. I saw your video, and it looks great!

    2. Thanks, Jane! They're must be a world of difference between the versions of IMovie, 'cause I cannot figure out how to make a video like yours with the version I have!

    1. Thanks. Some of these colors are new to me, as I am trying Holbein acrylics in tubes in addition to my usual Golden fluid acrylics. Manganese blue, "compose blue" - whatever that is, napthol red, pyrrole orange, some mixed with yellow.... and, of course, a bit of quinacridone gold. I love the Blick Matte Acrylics for neutrals. See the LINKS page on my website for specifics and sources.

  6. Could you share what you are using to make the scribble marks, I.e., oil pastels or paint sticks? Also, if it is oil based, then what will you use to protect the finished painting? I would like to use oil pastels over acrylic, but don't think the acrylic varnish would work as a protective coat..

    Thanks,
